David Rogers was born in Greenfield Massachusetts and it was there in his early childhood that he developed an interest in what was to become a primarily self-taught ability to copy portraits and images of prominent individuals of the time. Black and white portraits in graphite or charcoal would be his preferred medium throughout the 1970’s. It was during the late 70’s that he began producing concise portraits which would remain his primary interest going forward. His children were often the subjects of his work as ready and passionate models.

Color was later introduced in his work via charcoal’s cousin, the dry pastel, and a whole new world was discovered. His early works were often displayed annually at a local agricultural fair where he won many first place ribbons and created a modest following.

Sporadic drawing and design courses taken at a local community college, when time from work and family allowed, would become David’s only formal training in the arts. It soon became clear that self-study would become his path. David moved to Falmouth Massachusetts in 1996, devoting most of his efforts to family and his electrical contracting business. Art again took backseat.

Over the years here, he has taken part in various portrait groups and a brief course in the ‘Old Masters’ style with local artist friend, Doug Rugh. But not until this past year, having become a Falmouth Artists Guild member, has David finally made this most recent commitment to become a full-fledged member of the wonderful local artist community here on the upper Cape. With his sketch pad and original pencil box always close at hand, large, 30”x40” oil landscapes and seascapes in his own custom frame creations are his latest passion. Brilliant sunsets over Buzzards Bay near David’s North Falmouth home continue to give an inexhaustible supply of artistic fodder and inspiration.

Always exploring new artistic endeavors, his latest fascination is producing concise portraits on a tablet. David’s work has been displayed in open and juried shows at The Falmouth Art Center, Mashpee TV, Falmouth Hospital, and previously at Falmouth Community Television.
