Featured Artist Joan Johnson at Eastwind Gallery, Orleans

Presented by Eastwind Studio and Gallery at Eastwind Gallery and Studio

Joan Johnson has long been involved with artistic endeavors, having received awards at an early age for fashion design, been involved in theatre production, and designed and published a Caribbean Travel Directory from 50 Rock Plaza, NYC for several years. After obtaining an Associate’s Degree at Norwalk Community College, she completed courses at Fairfield University (CT) and became a Certified Graphic Designer. She was blessed with many adventurous years of designing for businesses in Fairfield County, CT, including corporative logos, labels and package designs for medical products, sales circulars for retail stores, menu designs for restaurants, magazine and newspaper articles, and radio/TV commercials. She studied early American Art and volunteered teaching art to elementary school children and traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC). Later, Joan became a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church, graduating from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington DC. For 15 years, Joan served at two appointments, in Mountainville, NY and Seymour CT. Artistic opportunities continued for altar design, theater production, Sunday Bulletins, posters, wall banner designs, retreat theme planning and visual effects. She also volunteered for many years at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC at the Eye Clinic for children using art therapy, worked at various denominational churches in CT, NY and MA in Vacation Bible School activities with art and puppetry, and has been part of the Yarmouth Art Guild Student Art Painting Class team.

On the Cape, Joan has attended art classes with Odin Smith at both the Cape Cod Art Association and at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. A dear friend and teacher, Margrit Mason, has also helped her tremendously to gain a better understanding of light, shadow and reflection.

Joan is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association. She currently serves as the President and the Public Relations contact of the Yarmouth Art Guild, editing the “Paintbox Newsletter” and served as the Interim Director of the Guild’s Artists’ Paintbox Gallery. She is the Vice-President of the (Dennis) Monday Painters, and is a member of the Fine Arts League of Cary (NC). Joan also serves on the Board of Directors of the Educational Foundation of Dennis/Yarmouth for which she creates annual puppet shows with school children.

Joan has displayed her art in galleries, local restaurants, libraries, churches, senior centers, retirement communities, at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod and at the Fine Arts League of Cary, NC. She has received various awards for original artwork
