"Summer Harvest of Paintings" - Mashpee Senior Painters

Presented by Falmouth Community Television at Unknown

Artwork by the Mashpee Senior Painters will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television from September 3 through September 28, 2017. The public is invited to attend the Opening Reception on Sunday, September 10, from 3:00-5:00 pm.

The Mashpee Senior Painters are a group of seniors from Falmouth, Osterville, and Mashpee who meet at the Mashpee Senior Center on Wednesdays to paint in the medium and subject of their choice.  Barry Jones-Henry functions as the instructor and coach. Student levels range from beginners to intermediate to accomplished.  Some members of the group participate year-round, while others are summer folk, and others are occasional drop-ins. The group began in 2008 in the old Mashpee Senior Center on Route 130 in a “walk-up” second-floor room, completely inadequate for painters. Two years later, the new Mashpee Senior Center building provided a large arts and crafts room. New members at any artistic level are welcome to join.

This exhibiting group consists of:

BARRY JONES-HENRY, INSTRUCTOR - Barry holds a BFA from Mass College of Art, and taught in public schools from 1962-1965.  He went on to get his Master’s Degree in Painting from UC Berkley 1970-1975.

CRICKET GEORGE – For a change of pace from a career dealing in numbers all day, Cricket joined the group at the Mashpee Senior Center about 8 years ago and paints in acrylics.

CHRISTINE O’NEILL - After retiring as a registered nurse and moving to Cape Cod four years ago, Christine decided to give painting a try. Her artistic skills have grown from learning experiences with teachers Odin Smith, Gretchen Irving and Barry Jones-Henry.

ANNE (SUSIE) GARVEY - Susie decided to follow up on many years of painting instruction after retiring from teaching at the elementary school level and moving to the Cape.

MICHAEL PUGLIESE - With Barry’s guidance, Michael has rekindled his interest in painting, and is pleased with his progress in acrylics.

BETTY LEWANDOWSKI - Betty developed her art appreciation through living in 9 different states and 2 foreign countries over the years. “Painting has been an experience in exploration and appreciation of my immediate environment in the media of watercolor and acrylics,” she explains.

HARVEY SLANSKY - A retired physician, Harvey took up painting and excelled. He takes classes in Florida in the winter, and has been with the group for 4 years.

NANCY FIORE - Nancy joined the group with her mother, Dorothy Harding, whose artwork Nancy has always admired. She is reviving her interest in Fine Arts which began in Junior High.

DOROTHY HARKINS - “I have painted with acrylics, pencil, and oils,” says Dorothy. “I had no formal painting classes until I joined the Mashpee Senior Painter’s group with Barry, a few years ago.”

CINDY WILSON - “I am enjoying that afternoon time set aside to learn by observing, listening and just doing.”

ELLEN HANLEY - A retired registered nurse, Ellen says of her Senior Painters experience: “Gradually the artist in me is emerging.”

JUDITH BURNETT - A native of Boston and Juried Artist of the Cape Cod Art Association, Judith began painting after retiring from her position of Dean at Bunker Hill Community College. She feels that painting is spiritual. It provides strength and joy in her life.

GRETCHEN IRVING – Gretchen graduated from RISD with a degree in Art Education. She taught in the public schools for 35 years, including Springfield College and Westfield State and has been with the group about 6 years. She teaches a watercolor class at the Mashpee Senior Center, and occasionally substitutes for Barry Jones-Henry.
