Launch Party for John Whelan’s and Kim Roderiques’ new book I Am of Cape Cod

Presented by Cultural Center of Cape Cod at Cultural Center of Cape Cod

Chatham native John Whelan is a retired stockbroker who has a semi-monthly radio program on WQMR-FM in Provincetown, playing rock music from the fifties, sixties and seventies. He is also a regular contributor to The Cape Cod Chronicle and has published two books for children, The Little Sockpirate and Miss Egret Regrets. Photographer Kim Roderiques specializes in portraiture as well as documenting private and public social events. Her previous book Dogs on Cape Cod featured a delightful collection of color photographs of dogs frolicking against a backdrop of the Cape. Her photography has also appeared in national magazines and been exhibited in the Boston area.

I Am of Cape Cod: People and Their Stories is the first book to celebrate the ordinary people, natives and washashores, who make their lives on Cape Cod and the special connection that they feel with the region. John and Kim drove the length and breadth of Cape Cod to all fifteen towns, from Provincetown to Sandwich, to interview and photograph the 139 individuals that appear on these pages. The selection of subjects collectively represents a cross section of Cape Codders—every type, size, shape, age, and lifestyle. Here are the fishermen, artists, politicians, scientists, farmers, entrepreneurs, environmental activists, writers, and others who give the Cape its particular character and spirit. Each shares a personal and moving story about what living on the Cape means to them. In addition to black-and-white portraits, the book features an opening section of evocative color photographs depicting iconic Cape Cod landscapes and scenes, which creates a visual context within which to better understand the powerful bond that exists between the place and its inhabitants. Several of the people highlighted in this terrific book will be at the event, telling their own personal story of their Cape Cod experience! Admission is free. Refreshments will be served.
