Concert: The Percussion Plus Project

Concert: The Percussion Plus Project

at First Church

The Sandwich Arts Alliance is proud to announce the first concert of its new Village Concert Series. The Percussion Plus Project, will perform Saturday evening, September 12th at 7:30 pm at the iconic First Church, Sandwich, 136 Main Street. Two Sandwich musicians play key roles in this inaugural concert. Percussionist Amy Lynn Barber is founder and artistic director, and composer David Cohen wrote a piece expressly for the ensemble.

The Percussion Plus Project, founded in Prague in 1993, is a ground-breaking, internationally-known ensemble that plays innovative, contemporary repertoire for percussion instruments with invited guest soloists. Guests for this concert will be Cape Symphony cellist Bo Ericsson, Boston-based flutist Orlando Cela, and Cotuit Center for the Arts Executive Director and pianist David Kuehn. Barber and Cape Symphony timpanist Mark Prall will play marimba, vibraphone, drums, cymbals, and gongs. The variety of percussion instruments adds visual and choreographic excitement to the already unusual sonic combinations.

Always focusing on works by living composers, the ensemble is especially pleased to bring a new piece by David Cohen to Sandwich audiences. Cohen is known for his film scores and for his work with the Cape Symphony. Barber noted, “I am very happy to bring David’s music here to his hometown. We premiered the piece in May, and the audience loved it. Sandwich will, too. And he’s promised to say a few words about the piece at the concert.”

A reception following the concert will be held next door at the Dunbar Tea Room. Sandwich Arts Alliance President Joanne Westerhouse explained, “It’s a chance to celebrate the Village Concert Series launch and to meet with the performers and fellow concertgoers. We’re thrilled to have this caliber performance in Sandwich and more to come – the Cape Cod Sax Quartet, Solstice Singers, and others.”

Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased at www.sandwichartsalliance.org or at Heart of Stone and Splash Stationers on Rte. 6A in Sandwich or at the door that evening.  Parking is available at the rear of First Church or on the street.
