Dorothy C. Miller: A Passion For Friendship

Dorothy C. Miller: A Passion For Friendship

Presented by Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) at Provincetown Art Association and Museum

ABOUT THE LECTURE

Dorothy C. Miller was a discerning and influential tastemaker for over 35 years at the Museum of Modern Art where she was the resident expert in American art.  She believed that the best way to understand an artist’s work was to enter into a dialogue with them.  Empathetic and curious, Miller sought out new and younger artists throughout her career and in the process, she developed a wide circle of friends, including many of the artists who were drawn to Provincetown.

WENDY JEFFERS

Wendy Jeffers has lectured and published widely on Dorothy Miller whom she met while still in graduate school.  “A Passion for Friendship” will chronicle the many friends she had in the Provincetown artists community.  A Clairvoyant Curator, is the title of her forthcoming book on Dorothy’s life and career.  No stranger to Provincetown, Jeffers spent several weeks tracking the whereabouts of Niles Spencer who lived in Provincetown for more than 17 years in preparation for an exhibition that she organized for the Whitney Museum of American Art.  The author of many essays and exhibitions about art and artists of the Twentieth Century, Jeffers also served for many years on the Board of the Archives of American Art, a division of the Smithsonian Institution.
