The Church of the Transfiguration overlooks picturesque Rock Harbor in Orleans. The church offers guided tours every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m (closed Wednesday). This contemporary interpretation of an ancient basilican style of architecture combines
The Church of the Transfiguration is a contemporary expression of an ancient fourth-century style of architecture — a heritage shared by all Christians, and its shape reflects the Community’s monastic tradition and ecumenical vision. Constructed of Minnesota limestone, it features a long rectangular nave, a rounded apse at the east end, narrow side aisles, a peaked timber roof, and interior columns and arches along the side aisles.
The Church is a visible sign of God’s presence in the midst of a living fellowship. As a permanent testimony to the love and faithfulness of God, the church visually proclaims God’s word with truth, beauty and dignity. Combining mosaics and frescos, sculpted bronze, stone, and glass, the art program recounts God’s saving action redeeming humanity, drawing on scripture, church tradition, and the local setting of Cape Cod to visually proclaiming the message that all earthly life has heavenly meaning, and in all things God may be glorified.
