The Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra Presents “Telemann and Bach - A Musical Friendship”

The final concert of this season’s Village Concert Series presented by the Sandwich Arts Alliance will bring to the Cape for the first time the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra, led by world-famous Baroque cellist and long-time Sandwich summer resident Phoebe Carrai.

The concert will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Philip Telemann by focusing on his musical friendship with Johann Sebastian Bach. The program will include works by Telemann and Bach, as well as one of Bach’s many musical sons, Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach. Featured will be concertos for oboe and violin, and for recorder, as well as the first of J.S. Bach’s Orchestral Suites.

Winner of the prestigious Erwin Bodky Award for excellence in early music, the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra is dedicated to bringing back to life the vivid rhetoric and dancing rhythms of baroque music. The musicians play on authentic baroque period instruments. The group is composed of students and recent graduates from Harvard, as well as the New England Conservatory, the Boston Conservatory, Boston University and the Longy Schools of Music.

Director Phoebe Carrai is on the Early Music faculties of the Julliard School in New York and the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, MA. She has had a long international career as a performer and teacher of Baroque music, and was a member of Musica Antiqua Koln for many years. She has taught in Germany, Holland, and Brazil, and continues to make guest appearances throughout the world. She has recorded extensively for Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Gramophone, Aetma, Telarc, Decca and BMG, and has a CD of the six Bach Suites for Solo Violoncello on the Avie label. She plays on a restored Italian cello made in ca. 1690.
