Shirley will be demonstrating the basic techniques of encaustic painting. She will discuss the surfaces and structures that are suitable as the basis of encaustic paintings, and the relevant properties of waxes and pigments. She will show how the building up of successive layers of semi-transparent wax can be used to generate varied textures and color effects. She will display some of the techniques she has used in her own work, which is on exhibit at Woodruff’s Art Center for the month of March.
