Modern Portraiture on the Beach with Anastasia Egeli

Modern Portraiture on the Beach with Anastasia Egeli

Presented by Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) at Provincetown Art Association and Museum

Paint on the beach in Provincetown with renowned local artist, Anastasia Egeli. Monday morning, please arrive 15 minutes early, and we will discuss setting up an outdoor palette with colors. Using a live model for all five days, students play with composition and complete simple mosaics on canvas to explore color and light. On Tuesday, with the same model, we will fix mosaics and fine-tune our color choices using what has been learned. On Wednesday, the composition will be redrawn, and explore the top light, bottom light and side light. Thursday focuses on features and main articulation on the figure. Friday, work together to fine tune the final painting. Daily we will discuss objectives and will be coached on an individual basis. By the end of the workshop, you will have created a finished, authentic piece.

Anastasia Egeli began her professional career at age seven. She took classes her parents organized at their farm in Maryland and in Provincetown. Studying with Henry Hensche, one of Charles Hawthorne’s students, Anastasia developed a realist painting method informed by a colorist sensibility. After graduating from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Anastasia studied with Nelson Shanks (also a Hensche student). She developed her style, one steeped in the New England School of Painting, which infuses portraits with luminous color and lively brushwork. Currently, Anastasia lives and works in New York City. She offers portrait workshops at the Egeli studio in Maryland, and also teaches color theory during the summer in Provincetown, MA.
