What made the Space Race possible?  What made it necessary?  How close a race was it?  And what did it achieve?  Answers lie in the story and backstory of rocket science, navigation science, computer science, and the system engineers that wove those strands together.  An even-handed treatment of American and Soviet people and events in the Space Race.

Hugh Blair-Smith worked on Guidance and Navigation computer systems for Apollo and the Space Shuttle.  He worked at MIT’s Draper Lab and later was a commercial software engineer.
