150 Years of Reading Great Books

150 Years of Reading Great Books

Presented by Sturgis Library at Sturgis Library

Anne Speyer, editor, library director and teacher, will lead a discussion of selections from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.
When the first edition of Walt Whitman’s anthology Leaves of Grass burst onto the literary scene in 1855, it not only changed forever the shape of poetry but also revolutionized its content. Shocking to American nineteenth century sensibilities--and it surely shocked many staid Cape Codders-- Whitman celebrated everything about being human and being alive: our bodies and emotions, our work and our play, our desires and our diversity.
