Driven to Collect

at Heritage Museums & Gardens: Automobile Gallery

Driven to Collect showcases Heritage’s permanent collection of antique and classic automobiles with a whole new look, plus a carload of interactive fun! Discover how Heritage founder Josiah K. Lilly, III collected American automobiles in much the same way as collectors assemble their collections. All have great passion for the objects they collect and some have a desire to share their collections with others. What Americans collect says a lot about our culture. What people of other cultures collect similarly defines their shared experiences.

Driven to Collect features the fine cars in the Heritage collection, including a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster owned by Gary Cooper, a 1935 Ford Phaeton, a rare 1927 LaSalle, and a 1909 White Steam Car Model M owned by President Taft. In addition, the Collector’s Corner features autos on loan from private collectors. This year, auto collector David Geisinger will display his 1966 Volvo P1800, 1983 Land Rover Series III Stage One, and a 1955 Porsche Spyder.

Driven to Collect is located in the Automobile Gallery, which is a reproduction of the Round Stone Barn at Hancock Shaker Village.

Also on display at Heritage: The Wyeths: America Reflected (June 6 - September 27), featuring paintings by three generations of America’s best known art family; Secret Shelters (June 6 – October 15), artistic shelters tucked around Heritage’s gardens designed for contemplating nature, meditating, and more; The Heritage Collection (April 18 – October 15), featuring beloved Heritage-owned artifacts in a new display, including American paintings, rare artifacts and the famed military miniatures.
