August 25 - October 2, 2016 Woodruff's Art Center will have on view "Textures of Nature" an exhibition of encaustic wax art by six Boston area artists. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, August 25th from 5:30 - 7:30pm. The artists will be present to meet and discuss their techniques.

Inspired by the beauty and artistry of nature, six encaustic artists share their vision of the natural world depicted through the medium of hot wax painting. Hot wax painting, known as encaustics, is a combination of melted beeswax and oil paint. This ancient method of painting dates originates as with Greek artists in as far back as 5th century B.C. The term encaustic is derived from the Greek word "enkaustikos" which means to burn in.

Artists paint with it while it is molten and use tools like warmed brushes, heat guns, torches, and irons. Hot wax painting is ideal for representing nature's textures as it is readily molded, shaped, layered, carved, poured, burned, and dripped.

These unique works feature stunning tactile surfaces from smooth as glass to deep relief all in exploration of earth, sky, water, plants, fruits, and geological formations.

The artists included are Lois Arthur of Waltham, Tama Drasher of Dover, Debbie Kurlansky Winer of Newton, Claire Ryan-Robertson of Newton, Margaret Scoppa of Jamaica Plain, and Jan Waitz of West Newton.
