Born in Shanghai, Copley Master Christopher Zhang specializes in portraiture and landscapes, but he is a versatile artist whose several styles—including still life, Chinese traditional painting, and calligraphy—are all very popular. Christopher works primarily in oil but is also accomplished in watercolor, acrylic, gouache, and Chinese ink. His subject matter paintings focus on two major themes: the Chinese minorities and their indigenous cultures and traditions, and classical ballet. Most of China’s many minorities reside among the rigid mountains, grasslands, and deserts of the “wild west” where isolation has preserved traditions and social customs that Christopher depicts so well in his work. Similarly, classical ballet is imbued with traditions and beauty that have inspired some of Christopher’s strongest work. He sees in ballet a perfect combination of visual and performing arts; in the young dancers, symbols of purity and beauty; in the female body shape, the classic aesthetic standard. Please come watch this master artist paint with Cerise as his model. All are welcome.
