Hydrangea Pruning Demonstration

Hydrangea Pruning Demonstration

at Heritage Museums & Gardens

Even the most experienced gardeners can be overwhelmed by the prospect of pruning hydrangeas. Join noted hydrangea expert Mal Condon to learn how to selectively prune your plants to improve vigor, increase bloom density, control height, and enhance ornamental value. Discuss the tools, techniques and timing needed for effective pruning and see a hands-on demonstration of spring pruning methods for all species in the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society Garden at Heritage.

A lifelong gardener, Mal has been collecting, propagating and growing hydrangeas for more than 40 years. He and his wife Mary Kay owned and operated Hydrangea Farm Nursery on Nantucket, which had one of the largest hydrangea collections in the Northeastern US. Their extensive gardens featured eight species and over 200 varieties of hydrangeas. In early 2014, they relocated to Yarmouth Port and are busy re-establishing the nursery in their new location. Mal is Vice-President of the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society, and Program Co-Chair and speaker at the national Hydrangeas 2015 Conference. He is a popular speaker who shares the many virtues of hydrangeas across the country and internationally, and is a true custodian of the genus who is constantly searching for new plants and reviving often forgotten cultivars from all parts of the world.
