The Irish Session (seisiun)

The Irish traditional music session is a core activity in almost all Irish communities across the world.

It has been defined as “…a gathering of Irish traditional musicians for the purpose of celebrating their common interest in the music by playing it together in a relaxed, informal setting…”. The music is played primarily by amateur musicians on instruments such as flute, fiddle, accordion, tin whistle, bodhran, concertina, guitar, banjo, mandolin, harp, uileann pipes.  Singing, dancing and story-telling often forms part of an evening of Irish music.

The current popularity of Irish traditional music and the seisiun owes much to the Irish musicians who emigrated to the United States.  The great loss of people from Ireland was the great gain for America. Irish music flourished in the Irish communities of New York, Boston, Chicago, (to name just a few) and in time the great music of the emigrants returned to Ireland on vinyl and radio and injected a momentum that contributed greatly to the revival of Irish traditional music in the 1950’s and 60’s.
