Thousands of world-famous rhododendrons in over 100 varieties and an explosion of color cover 100 acres with spectacular blooms. Enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by walls of flowers, learn more about Heritage’s storied rhododendron legacy, participate in activities with horticulture experts, and take one of these signature plants home with you from the special plant sale.

All Rhododendron Festival programs are free with museum admission. No advance registration required.

Daily Rhododendron Collection Walking Tour
Saturday, May 21 – Monday, May 30

Meet at the Parade Field

Take a deep dive into the world of rhododendrons. Discover how the work done here by two hybridizers – Charles Dexter and Jack Cowles – contributed to the genus Rhododendron and created the plants we love today. Guides will select the most spectacular spots for viewing these stunning plants. No advance registration required. Free with museum admission.

Join the horticulture staff to learn how to selectively prune your plants to improve vigor, increase bloom density, control height and enhance ornamental value. Discuss the tools, techniques, and timing needed for effective pruning, and watch a demonstration of techniques on various plants along a walk through the garden. Free with museum admission.

Extending the Rhododendron Season with Wayne Mezzit

Come learn from local rhododendron expert and owner of Weston Nurseries, Wayne Mezzit, about how to extend the spring bloom season by embracing the wide range of plants within the rhododendron family. Go on an informative walking tour that highlights traditional and fringe rhododendron and discover a variety breeds that can bring color into your home landscape! Bring your questions to this interactive discussion. Free with museum admission.

Heritage’s horticulture staff will share the basics of how to maintain and care for your rhododendrons. Included are demonstrations of ideal growing situations, watering, fertilizing, mulching, pest control, and demonstrations of pruning, bud-pinching, and dead-heading to encourage optimal health and beauty. Free with museum admission.

Rhododendron Pests and Disease Control Walking Tour

Walk the gardens with the horticulture staff to learn about the unique pests and diseases that afflict the rhododendron. Learn about how Heritage uses a managed, sustainable approach to controlling pest problems. Free with museum admission.

Rhododendron Propagation Demonstration

Everyone wants more of these great plants, and Director of Horticulture Les Lutz will show how easy it can be to propagate them. Learn how and when to take cuttings. Watch a demonstration of techniques and leave knowing how to successfully propagate your own rhododendrons this fall. Free with museum admission.
