Author Talk with Megan Mayhew Bergman

Presented by Museums on the Green (operated by the Falmouth Historical Society) at Falmouth Museums on the Green

Author Megan Mayhew Bergman will discuss her new book, “Almost Falmouth Women,” at Falmouth Museums on the Green on Wednesday, April 1 at 7 PM. The event will be held in the Cultural Center, 55 Palmer Avenue. Admission is $5 for members and $8 for non-members; no reservations required.

The fascinating lives of Ms. Bergman’s subjects have mostly been forgotten, but their stories long to be told. Nearly every story in this collection, released by Scribner in January, is based on a woman who attained some celebrity–she raced speed boats or was a conjoined twin in show business; a reclusive painter of renown; a member of the first all-female, integrated swing band. From Lord Byron’s illegitimate daughter, Allegra to Oscar Wilde’s troubled niece, Dolly to “West With the Night” author Beryl Markham to Edna St. Vincent Millay’s sister, Norma. These extraordinary stories travel the world, explore the past, and portray fiercely independent women defined by their acts of bravery, creative impulses, and sometimes reckless decisions. The book is a New England Independent Booksellers Association bestseller.

Ms. Bergman was raised in North Carolina and now lives on a farm in Vermont. In April, the Fellowship of Southern Writers will award her the Garrett Award for Fiction.
