Woods Hole Jazz Presents Bassist Bruce Gertz

Jazz Bassist Bruce Gertz will appear on Tuesday, March 24th, 7:30PM at Woods Hole Community Hall as part of the Woods Hole Jazz series. Tickets are $20. Gertz will appear with Tim Ray (piano), Tucker Antell (sax) and Austin McMahon (drums).

A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where is in now a professor, Gertz built his reputation as a versatile soloist and accompanist performing with a Who’s Who of jazz luminaires including Gil Evans, Dave Brubeck, Count Basie, Charles McPherson, Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, Joe Williams, John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny, as well as pop groups The Fifth Dimension and the Coasters. He has toured and performed at international festivals with jazz notables Billy Eckstine, Gary Burton, Maynard Ferguson, and Makoto Ozone. Gertz has won many teaching and performance awards including the Boston Music Awards “Outstanding Bassist” from 1987 through1991. He performed  at JazzFest Falmouth 2011.

Gertz is known as the “bass guru” at Berklee College of Music having taught well-known players Victor Bailey, Esperanza Spaulding, Kai Eckhardt, and Juan Garcia-Herreros among many others. He has presented bass workshops and clinics all over the world. He recently started a new Indie label, Open Mind Jazz, which has five releases.

Perhaps best known as long-time pianist for Lyle Lovett, Tim Ray has appeared on over 70 recordings and performed with pop music icons Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, Jane Siberry and Soul Asylum. He performs regularly with top jazz musicians as well, including Gary Burton, Esperanza Spalding, Phil Woods, Scott Hamilton, Dave Douglas, Brian Blade, Lewis Nash and Rufus Reid to name a few. His classical credits include solo performances and concerts with Gunther Schuller, the Boston Pops, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and the Boston Classical Orchestra. He is a frequent performer in the Woods Hole Jazz series. Rounding out the Quartet are Tucker Antell on sax and Austin McMahon on drums.
