British Master Painters (1900 - 2014): An Introduction

Tracey Anderson, M.A., Royal College of Art, Art Historian, PAAM

Four sessions: 3/20, 3/27, 4/3, 4/10         10:30 - 12:00

3/20: Francis Bacon: Irish-born figurative painter known for his bold, graphic and emotionally raw imagery. Always controversial: one of the foremost chroniclers of the human condition since Caravaggio.

3/27: Lucien Freud: German-born painter, known chiefly for his thickly impastoed portrait and figure paintings; their psychological penetration and often discomfiting examination of the relationship between artist and model.

4/03: Howard Hodgkin: Painter and printmaker. His work conveys the relationship between hand, eye and memory that drives their process, visual structure and emotional temperature.

4/10: David Hockney: Painter, draughts-man, printmaker, stage designer and photographer. An important contributor to the 1960s Pop Art movement, Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.
