Woods Hole Jazz Presents Pianist Yoko Miwa

Woods Hole Jazz Presents Pianist Yoko Miwa

at Woods Hole Community Hall

Boston-based jazz pianist and Berklee College of Music faculty member Yoko Miwa will perform on Tuesday, March 10th, 7:30PM at Woods Hole Community Hall, 68 Water Street, Woods Hole. Tickets are $20. She brings longtime partners Will Slater on bass and Scott Goulding on drums.

A native of Kobe, Japan, she began taking lessons at age six but she didn’t pursue an interest in jazz until she met and studied with Minoru Ozone, a popular Japanese television organist and nightclub owner who is the father of piano great Makoto Ozone. Miwa worked at Ozone’s club and his music school until the great Kobe earthquake of 1995 destroyed both facilities.

She continued to study music at the Koyo Conservatory in Kobe until she won a competition for a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Once at Berklee, Miwa quickly began playing gigs with the most talented Berklee students before being chosen as an accompanist by vocal great, Kevin Mahogany. She has performed with many jazz luminaries including Slide Hampton, Arturo Sandoval, George Garzone, Jon Faddis, Jerry Bergonzi, Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lynne Carrington, Sheila Jordan, John Lockwood, and Jonathan Blake.

Miwa has recorded six albums. Her album, Live at Scullers, was chosen among the best CDs of 2011 by JazzTimes Magazine. That same year she was chosen to play a special concert: Marian McPartland & Friends at Lincoln Center, as part of The Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival. Her trio released their first major label album in Japan, Act Naturally, on the JVC Victor Entertainment label in 2012. She toured Japan with her trio  to rave reviews. “She is one of the best jazz pianists in Japan,” said Yozo Iwanami, of Jazz Hihyo Magazine. The Yoko Miwa Trio was voted Best Jazz Act by the Boston Phoenix in 2012.

Miwa’s Trio has played to sold out shows in top venues such as Sculler’s Jazz Club in Boston and the Blue Note NYC to strong reviews. “Miwa had just as much fun sending the rhythm section away and swinging by herself as she did engaging in a tightly spiraling, interlocking web of melody…pensively spacious minor-key blues, a scampering right hand against a stern left, tension and release around a central tone, intricately conversational interplay with the guys in her fantastic trio…She’s fun to watch and just as tuneful.” — The New York Music Daily.
