Three Steps to Stronger Paintings

Three Steps to Stronger Paintings

Presented by Cotuit Center for the Arts- The Art School at Cotuit Center for the Arts

with Mary L. Moquin
Begins March 19

This highly-structured, 8-week class will focus on what it takes to find your voice as an artist and learn ways to express it. The class is broken into 3 topics. The first two weeks will focus on composition and how it can be used to get your message across. The second two weeks are focused on value patterns and how color relates to value. The third two weeks focus on color mixing and color palettes. The final two weeks will be used to complete the paintings. This is a great class for all levels and all mediums, lots of handouts and discussion.

Saturday mornings, March 19-May 7
9:30 AM-12:00 PM in the Art Studio

Several Mat board scraps or pieces of masonite or heavy paper

For weeks 5 & 6:  COLOR
Color paints of your chosen medium.

It would be helpful if you have some of the following type of colors.  Each manufacturer has a different name for these, so I’ve chosen to just use a generic description with some of the common names in parenthesis.  When in doubt, open the tube of paint and look at it or mix it with a little white if it is too dark to see.  It is not my intention that people go out and purchase a lot of paint at this time.  We can work with what you have.  You will have better results if you have colors that fit in the following categories:

Yellow/orange - a yellow that has an orange tint (cad yellow deep, dairyliade, auroelin, azo)

Yellow- a pure yellow (can yellow light, hansa)

Yellow/green - a yellow with a slight green ting (lemon, zinc, greenish yellow, cinnabar grn)

Orange - a true orange, not too yellow, not too red.

Red/orange - a red that is a little on the orange side (cad red light, vermillion, scarlet, napthol       red light)

Red - a red that is a true red (quinacradone red, perm. red, winsor red, grumbracher red, avoid cad red or cad red deep)

Red/purple - A red that is on the purple side (magenta, quinacraadone magenta, alizaron, red violet

Green/yellow - a green that is on the yellow side (cinnabar green light, yellow green, sap)

Green - a true middle of the road green (permanent green light, hooker green)

Green/blue - a grenn that is on the blue side (pthalo green, viridian)

Blue/green - a blue that is on the green side (pthalo blue is a must, turquoise)

blue - a true blue (ultramarine, cobalt)

Blue/purple - a blue that leans towards purple (hard to find, ultramarine violet, some mauves)

Purple - (dioxanine purple, winsor violet)

Titanium White

We will have time to look at what colors you currently have and add or borrow where necessary.  It is perfectly fine to work with the colors you currently have for the sake of this class. I do not use any earth colors such as burnt sienna, yellow ochre, burnt umber, etc. and they will not be needed in these excercises.  You will create you own beautiful earth and neutral colors through mixing.

For weeks 7 & 8: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

We will compete the paintings that we have been exploring through the previous 6 weeks.
