Art 201: All media for intermediate painters

Art 201: All media for intermediate painters

Presented by Falmouth Artists Guild at Falmouth Art Center

This is a six week class.

Within the framework of an open studio and under the guidance of the instructor, students will develop their painting skills while working at their own pace on projects of their choice.
Some previous painting experience needed. All media are welcome. This is a series of guided painting classes with individualized instruction.

Procedures in class:
1. Tint your canvas. Set it aside to dry.
2. Make 2-3 line drawings in your sketch pad in order to perfect your composition. Indicate the direction of the light with an arrow.
3. Make 1 value drawing of your composition in your sketch pad.
4. On your canvas (or watercolor paper) make a very light line drawing of your composition.
5. Make a color graph (to be explained) in your sketch pad.
6. Begin your painting.

Claudia Smith-Jacobs received a B.A. from Boston University, M. Ed Lesley University, Hampstead School of Art, London, Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston. She enjoys helping students develop their own artistic style.

Materials List:
Sketch pad, pencil, kneaded eraser, charcoal, ruler, T-square, big brushes (1/2” wide filberts and flats plus one 2-3” wide brush from the hardware store and a few small filberts and flats) , palette knives, palette paper, canvas or heavy watercolor paper, a grey scale, a color wheel, white blackboard chalk, colored pencils, red oxide acrylic paint (recommended for oil painters, too). The painting medium (oils, acrylics, watercolors, etc.) and colors are up to you. Be sure to have, at least, the following colors: cadmium red, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, alizarin crimson, red oxide (acrylic), Paynes grey, titanium white. Be safe: Look for “AP” on paint labels!
If you are using oils, please bring environmentally safe solvents and a container in which to put leftover turpenoid so that you can take it home with you as it cannot be disposed of at the Guild.
SOURCE PHOTOS: Be sure to bring several enlarged photos of the individual components of your painting. For example, if you plan to paint a picture of a boat on a lake on a cloudy day with a house in the background, collect a few photos of boats, clouds, houses, etc. Before you come to class, clip these photos to a board. You will use these photos to create your own unique painting.
Remember: Your goal as a painter is to create, not to copy. With that in mind, you will become a better, more creative painter if you resist the temptation to come to class with a single photo, with the intention of reproducing an exact copy of that photo in paint.
If you are painting from a photograph that you have taken, be sure to enlarge it and, also, bring in at least 2 or 3 close-ups of key details in the source photo.

REFUND POLICY:
Refunds will not be given within one week of the start of a class. Classes are not pro-rated, and there are no makeups for missed classes. A $25 processing fee is withheld from all refunds.
The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class or workshop due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.
If Falmouth Public Schools are closed due to weather conditions, we will be closed and the missed classes will be rescheduled.
