January 18: Cape Cod Sax Quartet The Cape Cod Sax Quartet features some of Cape Cod’s most notable saxophonists: Bruce Abbott, Berke McKelvey, Ryder Corey, and Nicholas Suchecki. Please join us for an afternoon including jazz, classical, and popular music from an ensemble you have probably never heard before! Throughout the show, we will also teach the audience about the saxophone, including its roles in different musical settings, the various parts of the instrument, and the more unusual types of saxophones, including the 6 feet and 4 inches tall, 45 pound contrabass sax. Not only will you have fun, you will also learn something! January 25: Jacqueline Schwab For her solo performance at Cape Cod Museum of Art, pianist Jacqueline Schwab will perform vintage American heart songs and dance tunes from the age of Mark Twain and beyond—Stephen Foster and Civil War parlor songs, Victorian ballroom dance tunes, Scots and Irish tunes brought over by settlers, hymns and spirituals, ragtime—plus Latin waltzes and tango, blues, contemporary Celtic dance tunes, and more. Jacqueline’s musical arrangements and stories honor the historical, improvisational spirit of community music making but also link to the present day. Schwab creates spirited and meditative arrangements on traditional and vintage tunes from America, England, Scotland, and beyond—spinning out stories, in her variations on the themes. In Ken Burns’ words, “Jacqueline Schwab brings more feeling and intensity to music than anyone I know. Her playing is insistent, physical, heartfelt and ... unusually moving.” Playing with “the jazz/classical improvisational spirit of Keith Jarrett and the touch of George Winston ....” (New England Folk Almanac), Schwab has performed on over a dozen of Burns’ documentaries, including his Grammy-winning Civil War, his Emmy-winning Baseball, Lewis and Clark, Mark Twain, The War, The National Parks, and Dust Bowl. She has performed on The Irish in America, Ric Burns’ New York: A Documentary Film and other PBS documentaries. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton, celebrating Burns’ Lewis and Clark series, and also, with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. She has four solo recordings: Mad Robin, Down Came an Angel and Mark Twain’s America, and True Blue Waltz (partly funded through Kickstarter). She is married to Rev. February 1: Dixie Diehards: A Trip to New Orleans Known for their spirited presentations of Dixieland music, the Dixie Diehards play toe-tapping music from New Orleans of the 1920’s and 30’s. The Dixie Diehards will return to the CCMA to offer songs written and performed by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Walter Donaldson, Fats Waller and other greats of the early jazz era. The program will include a number of tunes you will recognize as well as a few you might not. One thing is certain: You’re sure to leave happier than when you arrived! The band includes a front line of trumpet, trombone, reeds (clarinet & sax). Rhythm section includes tuba, banjo, and drums. Since appearing at CCMA in 2014, the Dixie Diehards have given some 40 concerts throughout southeastern Massachusetts, receiving enthusiastic reviews from audiences of all ages. For more information, see www.dixiediehards.com February 8: Rita Moerschel + Two Canadian violinist, Catherine French, a member of the Boston Symphony since l994, has established herself as a versatile and accomplished soloist and chamber musician. Lauded for her ‘superbly lyric” playing and her “amazing level of artistry” by Strad Magazine, Ms. French is a dedicated member of the Calyx Piano Trio and Collage New Music. Her interest in chamber music has led to performances at the Marlboro, Banff, Portland, Missouri and Carolina chamber music festivals, quartet tours of Germany and China and annual concerts as part of the Prelude series at Tanglewood and the Curtisville Consortium. Joel Moerschel, cellist, received his early musical training from Chicago Symphony cellist Nicolai Zedeler and Karl Fruh, music professor at the Chicago Musical College. Recently retired after 33 years in the Boston Symphony in the Boston, Chicago, and Rochester, NY areas. He has performed chamber music with the Wheaton Trio, The Francesco String Quartet, and with members of The Muir Quartet, and contemporary music with Collage New Music and Boston Musica Viva.Mr. Moerschel taught at Wellesley College and at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute. Rita Southworth Moerschel, pianist, has been active in the Boston music world since l970, first as a graduate student at the New England Conservatory and then as a performer and teacher. Specializing in collaborative piano, she has given recitals in the Boston area with members of the Boston Symphony and also with Boston freelance musicians. She earned a Master of Education with distinction from Curry College where she is senior lecturer in the Fine and Applied Arts Department. February 15: Cerise & the Charlie Jamison Trio Cerise, with her strong soulful voice, is well recognized as one of Cape Cod's top vocalists. Performing twice with the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, Cerise earned much acclaim for delivering powerful performances. She continues to mesmerize audiences performing with jazz combo The Charlie Jamieson Trio at venues all over Cape Cod creating legions of dedicated fans. Cerise's Black Women in Jazz Tribute concert sold-out both at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod and The Wellfleet Preservation Hall last year. She also received standing ovations for her performances at the Cotuit Center for the Arts in "What the World Needs Now" a Burt Bacharach musical revue. Remember her name... Cerise sings in the style of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughn, selecting songs from the Great American Songbook. Cerise sings in Spanish performing many Latin numbers as well as performing in R&B and Blues styles. She will be accompanied by Charlie Jamieson (piano), Nick Rice (bass), Phil Vitali (drums). March 1: We Are the Men: “Cyngerdd Dydd G?yl Dewi!” – Saint David's Day Concert This Male Voice Choir performs hymns and other traditional pieces in both Welsh & English. They sing songs from Ireland and Scotland, sea shanties, spirituals, a little opera, English and American folk songs, a few pieces in German and Latin. Included will be music honoring St. David, the patron saint of Wales, which will be sung in Welsh, the native tongue of that country. A review in the Mashpee Enterprise (July 2, 2010), in part, had this to say about We Are The Men: “They perform in the all-male-choir Welsh tradition rooted in the time when Welshmen labored in the coal mines and sought diversion in singing together.” Later, the review noted: “Also performed were four traditional hymns. Each contained more than several measures of 'amen' and 'alleluia;' each one unique and yet as powerful as the previous. This was music of the spirit, and it was apparent from the choir's focused energy that these singers loved the praising aspect of these pieces...the concert left the audience in a joyous spirit.” March 8: Bijou Gypsy Jazz Performing in the Bijou Gypsy Ensemble will be Lary Chaplan, violin; Gary Gross, guitar; and Bert Jackson, guitar, in the style of Django Rinehart, the music of 1930s Hot Club of France. Gary Gross attended Berklee where he studied jazz guitar with Harry Leahy and classical guitar with Frederick Hand of the Metropolitan Opera of New York. Gary teaches and performs on Cape Cod and loves all styles of guitar. Originally from LA, Lary Chaplan played as a free lance violinist in New York for 18 years, working with various symphonies, pit orchestras, rock bands, and jazz bands. In 1989, Lary moved to Cape Cod and joined the Cape Symphony Orchestra. Bert’s style is diverse and unique with a strong background in jazz and blues, flavored with his love for world music and the unusual. Bert organizes several local festivals and co-hosts the Feed Your Love Open Mic at Wellfleet Preservation Hall. March 15: Schultz/Ericsson Cello Duo The husband-wife team of the Schultze-Ericsson Cello Duo will present a wonderful hour of cello duets. The music from the Baroque period to the present, will be presented with the usual finesse and great musicality which makes this Duo a Cape Cod favorite. Elizabeth Schultze, cellist, is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory where she was a student of Andor Toth, a winner of the concerto competition and soloist with the Oberlin Orchestra. She spent many summers playing in festivals including Taos, the National Repertory Orchestra and the Colorado Festival Orchestra. Liz has been a member of the Oklahoma Symphony and the Bergen (Norway) Philharmonic, and the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, and has played extensively with ensembles in Atlanta, Copenhagen, Torino and Stockholm. Since coming to the Cape in 1991, Liz has been a member of the Cape Cod Symphony and the Simon Sinfonietta, and has maintained a large studio of cello students at her home in East Orleans. Bo Ericsson, a native of Sweden, graduated from the Gothenborg Conservatory of Music and studied at the Swedish Radio School in Stockholm. He has been principal cellist with both the Bergen (Norway) Philharmonic Orchestra and the Upsala (Sweden) Chamber Orchestra. As a cellist of the Berwald String Quartet he toured extensively throughout Europe. On Cape Cod he is principal cellist with the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, an active chamber musician and teacher of cello and is a member of the Schultze-Ericsson Cello Duo. March 22: Town Cove Chamber Players A beautiful selection of Chamber music by accomplished musicians Betty Tipton, piano; Kwon Faith, violin; Monika Woods, clarinet; and Lisa Gross, piano and cello. March 29: Bert Jackson Quartet (BJQ) The BJQ, whose members are all year-round Cape Codders, is a Jazz band that plays an eclectic mix of jazz standards, a touch of blues, and original compositions. Known for their tight arrangements and upbeat sound, the BJQ brings an appropriate intensity to each venue, whether for an indoor cocktail reception or an outdoor showcase concert. The Bert Jackson Quartet (BJQ) consists of Bert Jackson on guitar, Paul Lesniak on saxophones, Roe Osborn on bass and Kareem Sanjaghi on drums. The musical program will include jazz compositions by Bert and Roe from the BJQ’s new CD, Imaginary Journey, as well as some of the band’s favorite swing and Bossa standards. Always fun, always upbeat, the BJQ delivers great music with much joy and a bit of the unexpected. April 12: Jenifer Jackson and the Denim Bridge Jenifer Jackson and her bandmates will play a selection of Jenifer's original compositions, hand-picked by Jenifer from her 11 albums. The band will focus on her latest release (TEXAS SUNRISE) as well as some new (un-released) songs and a few chestnuts. Jenifer Jackson is an American songwriter, singer and guitarist known for crafting intimate, understated pop songs. Critically-acclaimed releases include Slowly Bright, The Outskirts Of A Giant Town, Birds, Passaporto, Love Lane, So High, The Day Happiness Found Me, and her most recent effort, Texas Sunrise. Her songs have appeared on television and film soundtracks and been covered by a wide variety of artists, including country artist Laura Cantrell, lounge-pop band Swandive and alternative rock icon Chris Brokaw.
