The Thornton Burgess Green Briar Nature Center & Jam Kitchen is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to inspire reverence for wildlife and concern for the natural environment as taught in the writings of conservationist and naturalist Thornton W. Burgess. Burgess’ stories of Peter Rabbit and his animal friends have instilled an awareness and love of nature in generations of children. The new Green Meadow Forest Exhibit at the nature center reintroduces this mission in a fun and interactive way for both young and old alike. The Menagerie, which provides environmentally accurate habitats for our small animal critters, gives visitors an opportunity to discover and learn about the live animals that inhabit Cape Cod.

Green Briar is also the home of the historic Jam Kitchen, which has been in operation since 1903. The kitchen’s delicious jams are available in the center’s Mercantile along with many nature related books, Burgess books, household items and unique gift ideas. Proceeds help to support the non-profit organization.

The Green Briar grounds offer an award-winning Wildflower Garden along with flowering plantings surrounding the two buildings. The lawn leads down to the shores of the Smiling Pool Pond, described in the Burgess stories as the home of Grandfather Frog and other critters. Visitors may also come across a swan or two gliding in this peaceful setting.
