Our Second Talk: American Modernism in New England from the 1890s to the 1960s with Carol Scollans with Boston University
Modern Art in America is defined by a generation of visionary artists experimenting with conceptions of realism, abstraction and non-representational art.
Unique to this region, from Maine to Provincetown, exist art colonies and enclaves that supported and advanced these endeavors in the American vernacular.
This lecture focuses on the men and women central to this van guard from the late 19th century up through the 1960s.
Speaker Bio:
Professor Carol G.J. Scollans has been a Senior Lecturer II in Art History for the Art Department at the University of Massachusetts, Boston for 20 years. She is also an independent scholar and curator. Her specialty has been the study of American Art and in particular, art, artists and collectors from Boston.
She has lectured both here and abroad on French and American 19th and 20th century painting, sculpture, graphic arts and photography. Her publications include works for the University of Massachusetts press, The New Hampshire Historical Society, Oxford University press and the University of New Hampshire.
She is currently researching a book in preparation for a future exhibition on the artists from the Island of Appledore in the Isles of Shoals and a catalogue raisonine on American Landscape painter John Enser.
