E. Louis Vuilleumier captured the innocence and beauty of coastal and rural Massachusetts in his impressive body of work, from Rockport to Provincetown, the sandy lanes and sleepy ports of the 1920s and 30s are like windows in time to a simple beauty lost forever to war and progress. Oils and Watercolors will be displayed along side his memorabilia as well as many letters home to family describing the sights and sounds of World War 2, He even managed to send a few paintings back that were painted with the few supplies he was able to carry in the field.
E.L.V had just begun his career as an art teacher at the SWAIN school of New Bedford, when he answered the patriotic call and joined the US Army medical corps. As a deeply spiritual and religious person – he vowed he would never take a life, but he enlisted to save others, and to defend the country he loved. Sadly, after surviving the campaign through Africa, he succumbed to Polio in a field hospital in Italy, and never returned to show his work, or go on to the acclaim he would no doubt have achieved as a mature artist. We offer this show over the Memorial Day Weekend to honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, we hope you will be able to join us in paying a tribute to this talented & brave local son.
