Studio Pottery: Pots and Process

Each two hour session will include interactive demonstrations and discussion on creating functional pottery. In addition to introducing and refreshing skills, the sessions will be participant driven focusing on the needs and wishes of the group. Topics will include throwing different functional forms, altering, vessel construction, lids and handles, glazing, decorating and firing. In addition to skill building, we will spend time with each form discussing design and aesthetic and how to bring those considerations into the pot while at the same time making sure it retains its utilitarian functionality. We’ve all encountered pots that look great but don’t work and vice versa. Let’s avoid that! 

Each session will also include an opportunity for participants to share their own work whether in process or finished. Paul will be live at his studio with a two camera set-up so you can see the action clearly and closely. As part of the workshop, students will also have an hour of 1:1 time with Paul to be used in a variety of ways including personalized instruction and coaching, technical considerations and consultation on home studio design and maintenance.

If you are enrolled in this online class you will be able to access for an additional fee open studio time at the Castle Hill Clay Studio during the duration of the session.

Paul Wisotzky is a studio potter and teacher from Truro, Massachusetts. He makes functional pottery intended for everyday use out of porcelain and stoneware.  He fires his work in soda, salt or reduction atmospheres. In 2019 Paul was awarded an Open Studio Residency at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts where he developed a technique to digitally design sponge stamps and then fabricate them using a laser engraver/cutter. 

This process was featured in Ceramics Monthly Magazine.  Paul uses the stamps to decorate his work in simple and complex patterns layering glazes and slips in a variety of methods. Paul has also been a Winter Resident at the Penland School of Craft.  He is an experienced educator sharing his love for studio pottery in classes and workshops.
