Shibori: Indigo Dye Workshop

The practice of dyeing with indigo is an incredibly rich cultural tradition, with each region of the world having its own unique dyeing approach to the dyeing process. Indigo has been used for thousands of years; it has survived tombs in Egypt, and made its way through Japan, and we are able to see it today in the American blue jean.

Shibori, an ancient Japanese technique of resist dyeing, will be taught with both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches. Indigo dyeing appeals to all ages, children will enjoy tie-dyeing and painting, while adults may prefer a more mathematical and precise approach; the processes may be as simple or as complicated as the artist wishes. Indigo dyeing is an art, not just a technique.

This workshop will educate students on the nature of the indigo plant, and its use in history. Examples of historical and contemporary indigo use will be presented as inspiration for the workshop. The Japanese technique of shibori and tie-dye will be taught, and students may use the techniques learned to create unique fabrics. Indigo dyeing appeals to all people regardless of age or skill. It can be as simple as tie-dyeing, or it can be a complicated and fastidious creation.

The shibori may take a long time, but the dyeing process is relatively quick, and results may be seen almost immediately. The dye process is exciting, and seeing the finished fabrics is gratifying. In this workshop students can work quickly with their hands and every piece will be unique and beautiful.
