ONLINE AND IN-PERSON: “Creative Color: The Painting Big Challenge,” with Betsy Payne Cook 

Presented by the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, this 5-week hybrid online/onsite class begins on October 26 from 2-4:30pm. Weeks 1, 4 & 5 will be online on Zoom, focusing on demonstration and class exercises. Week 2 & 3 will be hybrid—live at the Cultural Center but with an option to Zoom—and will focus on instructor critiques and individual painting time with feedback. Overall, the focus will be on the steps needed to accommodate a larger format painting. Imagine the excitement of working bigger than you normally paint! Participants will review what happens when they “go big,” with tips on how to expand the composition, set proportions for a larger format, and plan color options. Working large will be relative to each artist’s usual size preferences. Some might consider 12” x 16” large, while others may tackle 18” x 24”! Preliminary work will include using a strong composition, balance of shapes, and choices for underpainting backdrop. Instruction will include using notans as a main design element. Participants will have a choice of using sanded papers (mounted or unmounted) or prepared boards such as Ampersand Pastelbord or using self-prepared boards with pumice ground on gatorboard. (Self-prepared boards are optional and will be demonstrated during an in-person class. In-person students can pay a materials fee or bring their own supplies.  Virtual students will be given a supply list if they are interested in creating their own painting surfaces.) Until further notice, students over 12 in all Cultural Center classes will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test conducted within 72 hours prior to the event.
