A Fredi Schiff Levin Lecture with curators Breon Dunigan and Joe Fiorello and exhibiting artist Mark Adams
The artwork of Mark Adams is in large part autobiographical. This conversation with Adams and the exhibition curators will delve into and examine Adams’ personal journey, as well as looking at how we each make an environmental autobiography based our own experiences in ordinary and extraordinary encounters in the world. The expression of these encounters includes paintings of landscapes, maps, animals and figures — symbols of our connections to nature and place.
Adams says of his work: “Ever since I was introduced to Aldo Leopold’s “Sand County Almanac” as a teenager, I’ve been trying to acquire stories through journeys, whether in a few short steps or many miles. Naturalists and artists from Anna Atkins to Walton Ford, and from Alexander Von Humboldt to Graham Giese, have guided and inspired me along the way. I’m always amazed see what makes it onto the page and how it captures experience in some visual language, made up in the intuition of the moment.”
Dunigan and Fiorello will discuss with the artist how these observations and experiences translate into the artworks that are included in his exhibition.
The Fredi Schiff Levin Lecture Series was established in 2003 in honor of the artist Fredi Schiff Levin who was a member of Provincetown’s arts community from the 1960s until her passing in 2002. PAAM gratefully acknowledges John and Toni Levin, and Liz Lovati of Angel Foods who make this program possible with their generous support. FSL lectures are free to members of PAAM or with the cost of Museum admission ($10). A selection of previous lectures can be viewed on our YouTube page.
