Irish History: The Great Famine

A six-week class. Thursdays, November 5-December 17, 6-7:30pm. (No class on Thanksgiving night.) Sean Murphy, instructor. The “Great Famine” is perhaps the most significant event in the long and eventful history of Ireland. The legacy of the famine includes the millions that died of hunger and disease, the millions who emigrated, the near destruction of the Irish language, the social change that saw the virtual extinction of the cottiers and small farmers, and the strong feelings against the British government that eventually led to the Easter Rising and the War of Independence.
