Herring Run: Life and Death at Stony Brook

Herring Run: Life and Death at Stony Brook presents a photographic essay of the interaction between alewives and herring gulls made famous in The Run, by naturalist John Hay in 1959. Elliott Carr has never labeled himself a birder, a photographer or a naturalist, but when he retired in 2005, the ease with which he could take great pictures with a digital camera led him to take thousands of pictures of a nearby herring run.  In photographing and writing this and others of his books, Carr realized, like Muir, Beston and Thoreau, that birds and animals are clearly part of the same life chain as human beings, albeit with interestingly similar and different characteristics. This talk is free, but registration is requested. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
