In 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed legislation that established the Cape Cod National Seashore. 44,000 acres that include the untamed shoreline of the Atlantic Coast, along with dunes that yield to heathland, marshes, woods and ponds, were designated as a national park for public use. With histories tied to the sea, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown lie within the Seashore. The inclusion of these towns was a departure from the typical National Park model that previously created Parks from publicly owned or donated land.
