Join instructor Neil Grant in this fun and informative sculpting class that takes place completely on-line via Zoom. Aimed at those who have some experience in portrait sculpture either from taking a prior class or from their own efforts, this class will teach you how to sculpt a portrait in clay by working from photographs.
You’ll learn how to:
-Take photographs using a camera or phone so that you can sculpt from them
-Take measurements (if you can) or how to proportion the face from a photo
-Set up a portrait sculpture using an armature
-Establish your portrait in planes and then translate this to a finished piece
-Hollow your piece ready for firing
Neil will provide a set of photographs of a model we will collectively work from, but students are welcome to use their own photographs once Neil has reviewed them for suitability (do you have enough photographs, are they at the right angles etc?)
Students will need the following at home:
-A 12” sculpture stand- if you are moderately handy (can use a drill, saw and screwdriver) or know someone who is, Neil will send you instructions on how to make a stand out of either a dowel rod and a board, or plumbing fixtures, all of which are available at your local hardware store. Alternatively, you can purchase a sculpting armature inexpensively on-line (less than $US 20+postage).
-20-25lb of water based clay
-Basic sculpting tools (a recommended list will be provided)
Each lesson will be recorded so that students can refer back to it for the duration of the class and Neil is available via email to provide feedback and answer questions.
