"Coming Out 2021" with guest artists Mary Doering, Heather Pilchard, Diane Novetsky

Continuing our 2021 series “Coming Out”, we’ve invited three Massachusetts artists – MARY DOERING from Brewster, DIANE NOVETSKY from Somerville, and HEATHER PILCHARD from Wellfleet to show their work.
Mary Doering will exhibit her uniquely complex digital prints, Diane Novetsky will show her bold, biomorphic, acrylic abstracts, and Heather Pilchard will be displaying her semi-abstract paintings of the Outer Cape.
Also on display will be work by Suzanne M. Packer, Richard O. Perry, Hollis Fortune, John Howard, Georgene Riedl, Alla Zbinovsky, Leslie Kramer, Ellen C. Davies, Eveline Luppi, Kate Nelson and Sally S. Fine in the the other gallery rooms.

Mary Doering’s Artist Statement
“As an interdisciplinary artist, my unique prints begin by choosing images from my extensive collection of original photographs, textures, monoprints and calligraphic marks. Using the computer as both a tool and a partner, elements are layered together. Textures, lines, and color fields combine in surprising ways. I work intuitively allowing mystery and unpredictability to dictate where the process leads. “
Mary Doering grew up in North Dakota.  She studied design at the University of Minnesota, and Ceramics at the Museum School in Pittsburgh. She received her BA from Lesley College. Doering taught Ceramics in Connecticut and for thirty-eight years ran a pottery business in Orleans, Massachusetts with her husband Mikael Carstanjen. In 2008 Doering co-founded ArtSynergies www.artsynergies.com a group of artists who explore digital imagery as an integral part of art making.  In 2011 Doering, along with her husband Mikael Carstanjen founded the iPhone 9 as a way to share information about the rapidly growing field of iPhone technology.
Heather Pilchard’s Artist Statement
Heather lives the landscapes of the Outer Cape daily. Through her intimate knowledge of the saltmarsh, its daily ebb and flow and seasonal changes, she captures the poetry of the saltmarsh and the timeless invitation it extends to each of us to ponder, reflect, and dream.
Heather graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with a BFA in 1995. She is also an accomplished photographer, bookbinder, and teacher.
Diane Novetsky’s Artist Statement
“My work explores a somatic vocabulary of biomorphic forms evocative of the female body.  Bulbous, sensual, and whimsical shapes reference Art Nouveau, sixties psychedelia and early Modernism. Vignettes appear, from the erotic or sensual, to the mundane or comic. The connection of symmetry to the human body and its power to evoke an iconic sense of space are ongoing investigations.
Symmetry resonates with me due to its association with sacred art. It also serves to contain the high energy of the color and arabesque forms; providing a needed balance. Historically symmetry represented an ideal of beauty. My work engages subtle elements that depart from perfect symmetry in exchange for unpredictability.
Crisp contours are painted, freehand, into lush, flat surfaces that suggest spatial ambiguities. Unmodulated surfaces of saturated jewel color contrast to vertical pours. The pours resemble flowing tributaries; they envelop shapes and flow freely on passages of color. The synthetic palette of sulphurous yellow, neon orange and iridescent greys find counterparts in earthy greens, violets and reds oxides.
Images from observation, memory and the history of art serve as the source material for my painting. My work considers natural forms as well as digital imagery from our ubiquitous screens. I embrace the visual power of these two worlds and their combined effect has left a lasting impact on my art.”
Diane Novetsky is an abstract painter who uses bold, saturated colors and biomorphic forms evocative of the female body. She is a former graphic designer and business owner of Nova Design, as well as a longtime painting instructor. Her work has been widely shown throughout the region including Artspace Maynard, the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, Galatea Fine Arts, Danforth Museum of Art, Tufts University Aidekman Gallery and the Boston Convention Center. A former member of Galatea Fine Arts, Diane is a new associate member of the Kingston Gallery. Her work has been published in Artscope, Art New England, the Boston Globe and Boston Voyager. She received her BA from Wayne State University, Detroit, and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She resides in Somerville MA and is a founding member of the Brickbottom Artists Community. Diane has worked out of the Vernon Street Studios for over fifteen years.
