Changing Ways Cape Codders Have Used Their Place: The Twentieth Century to the Present

     Author and historian Dr. John T. Cumbler will return to the Hyannis Public Library on Wednesday, September 30 at 6 p. m. to complete his fascinating talk about  “The Land, the Sea and the Harbor: Changing Ways Cape Codders Have Used Their Place.” This talk is free and open to the public.

     Audience members were enthralled in July to discover the history and development of Cape Cod from the time of the glaciers to the beginning of the 19th Century.  But how was Cape Cod impacted during the 20th Century?  Dr. Cumbler will now focus on the influence of people, terrain, and economy in recent generations upon our fragile peninsula.

     John T. Cumbler, professor of history at the University of Louisville, splits his time between Louisville and Cape Cod.   His fields of specialization are United States Environmental History and Economic History, and he is also a trained and certified rescuer of large marine mammals and sea turtles.

     Dr. Cumbler has received the University of Louisville’s Distinguished Teaching Award, the University Trustee Award, and been recognized as Distinguished Research Professor at University of Louisville.   Additionally, he was a John Adams’ Distinguished Fulbright Professor in the Netherlands.  

     Dr. Cumbler’s most recent book entitled Cape Cod: An Environmental History of a Fragile Eco-system (University of Massachusetts Press 2014) will be available for sale and signing.
