African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard.

Please join us to explore and discover the engrossing story of the African American Heritage Trail on Martha’s Vineyard. Elaine Weintraub, Co-founder and Executive Director, will share the story of the creation, history and ongoing research of the Heritage Trail. A model public history project and physical path, the trail is a compilation of 30 different sites dedicated to previously unrecognized contributions made by people of African heritage. This important and fascinating project will thrill you with the stories of brave people escaping from enslavement and fighting to abolish it and inspire you with the spirit of the people of Martha’s Vineyard.

Ms. Weintraub is also the history department chair at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and has involved the students in all aspects of the development of this incredible resource. For several years, the history classes at the Regional High School were involved as research assistants and acted as tour guides, site maintenance staff, mural painters, web site developers, and musicians.  The work is ongoing as the AAHTMV identifies and celebrates sites in every town on Martha’s Vineyard.
