Hyannis HyArts Arts Campus | 46 and 50 Pearl | Gallery and Garage Studio | Guyer Barn

46 Pearl Street is a renovated and restored 1920 Colonial Revival style bungalow which was converted into an artist’s live/work studio in 2007. The house was once owned by John Marcoux and two teachers from the old Hyannis Normal School resided there. Prior to the town purchase, former owner Jan Girardi turned it into a modeling agency.

The HyArts Campus Artist-in-Residence program is an opportunity for an artist to rent a professional working studio space and gallery space in downtown Hyannis. This program is one of many arts-oriented town programs contributing to a lively cultural destination where working artists engage with residents and visitors alike.

Artist in Residence MELLISSA MORRIS opens her studio to the public, so feel free to visit when the Open flag is out.
Mellissa Morris received her Masters Degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Mellissa is a local abstract mixed media artist born and Raised on Cape Cod and the eldest daughter of seven children.

Mellissa currently teaches abstract and mixed media classes online -and through out Cape Cod; Cotuit Center for the Arts, Falmouth Art Center, and Cape Cod Art Center.

In addition to being a visual artist Mellissa plays ukulele and guitar and loves creating songs and performing.

STUDIO 50 Pearl | Anne Tochka 
50 Pearl Street was constructed in 1830 as a residential home and has a rich history as a gathering place for local artists, playwrights, and poets who congregated at the home for lively readings. Nautical-themed original Vernon Coleman murals decorate the basement walls.  In 2007, the Town of Barnstable purchased the property and completed extensive renovations, turning it into gallery and studio space.

Artist ANNE TOCHKA arrived on Cape Cod several years ago for the summer and found herself staying year round to soak up the inspiration found in the gorgeous landscapes in every season. Before becoming a full time painter, she attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and graduated with a BFA in Communications Design: Illustration. Educated as a visual storyteller, Anne further developed this skill in her professional life as a visual merchandiser and designer. She brings this training to her current work, using brushstrokes and color to describe the complex beauty in the world around her.

Anne has completed artist residencies in Sibiu, Romania and Puebla, Mexico. Immersion in unfamiliar settings and cultures has strengthened her visual language and given her the space to explore communicating specific places through painting.

50 Pearl GARAGE STUDIO
When the Town purchased 50 Pearl in 2007, it included a former detached garage on the property which was converted into artist work studio.  In 2021, this space is home to Graceful Fire Glass Studio, Carolyn Ferrell. Although a work studio, stop by when the doors are open to say hello and peek inside a glass workshop and peruse the resulting beads and jewelry.

Lampworking, the 14th century art of creating glass beads on a torch, became an obsession for Carolyn the first she tried it. Glass beads are easy to make, but difficult to master. After studying with Stephanie Maddalena she founded Graceful Fire Glass Studio in 2005. She has continued to study with both Jennifer Geldard and Cynthia Lieber Saari.

Carolyn says about Cape Cod: “I grew up staying at my Grandmother’s beach cottage each summer. There can be no better childhood memories than biking to the beach, swimming in the ocean, and clamming on Cape Cod. Later, when I retired from business, my husband and I relocated to Hyannis to care for a relative. I have managed to maintain a studio space for the last 15 years and enjoy demonstrating and selling my glass beads and jewelry. Being part of the HyArts campus is a dream come true for me. Now every day, I can walk on the beach with my dogs, restore our circa 1889 home and practice my art. Heaven!”

The Guyer Barn is open various hours, year-round.
You will always find the doors open when artists are busy working, or for classes and workshops.

The Guyer Barn is a community art space serving emerging and established local artists in a wide variety of genres.
Plenty of parking in the adjacent Barnstable Town Hall public parking lot.
You can access this parking lot from both Hyannis Main Street or South Street.
