Saint Patrick is the most famous person associated with Ireland. He is the Patron saint of Ireland and is recognized as having played a major role in the Christianization of Ireland. There are many myths and legends associated with Patrick. This course will look at the historical record based on available facts and accepted understandings. The talk will also reference the written works of Saint Patrick.

Patrick was kidnapped in Britain by Irish slave traders and taken to Ireland as a slave at age sixteen. He escaped after six years. He returned as a bishop in his forties and spent twenty five years ministering to the existing Christian community in Ireland - mostly foreign slaves and refugees - and helped to convert the indigenous Irish.

This talk given by Irish Historian Sean Murphy will examine the historical context of his mission in Ireland. This includes a review of the development of Irish society prior to his arrival; an overview of the history of Christianity in England and Ireland; an examination of the crises in Europe as the Roman Empire collapsed and how this impacted the situation in Ireland in the fourth and fifth centuries.
