2nd Wednesday Theater: Lone Star/Laundry and Bourbon

Presented by Cotuit Center for the Arts at Cotuit Center for the Arts

2nd Wednesday Theater: a monthly play-reading of rarely-performed classics, undiscovered gems, old chestnuts, and exciting new works. February 13 we present Lone Star and Laundry & Bourbon, two one-act plays by James McLure.

These two interconnected one-act comedies, both set in the small town of Maynard, Texas, feature three “good ole boys” in the first play and the three women they are involved with in the second.

“Lone Star” takes place in the cluttered backyard of a bar where Roy, a former high-school hero and returning Vietnam veteran, is struggling to readjust to life in Maynard. He and his younger brother Ray, who worships him, are occupied in consuming a case of their favorite Lone Star beer when Cletis arrives, and Roy discovers some unpleasant truths.

“Laundry and Bourbon” takes place on Elizabeth’s front porch on a hot summer afternoon. Elizabeth and her friend Hattie are folding laundry, watching TV, sipping bourbon and coke, and gossiping about the many open secrets that are so much a part of small town life. They are joined by self-righteous Amy Lee, who can’t resist blurting out that Elizabeth’s husband Roy has been seen around town with another woman.

The New York Times called “Lone Star” “an uproarious comedy about two bawdily rambunctious Texas brothers peppered with the playwright’s own brand of cascading, spontaneous wit.”

The cast for the reading features Eileen and Patrick Preston of Falmouth, Erika Strand of Woods Hole, Frank Hughes, Jr. of Mashpee, and Ryan Carey and Kerri Sadoff of Sandwich. Lance Norris is a long time veteran of stage, screen, and television, and can currently be seen on HULU’s Castle Rock and SMILF on Showtime.
