Physical comedy, hilarious commentary and serious efforts at a Pilates class.
The Sandwich Arts Alliance presents a staged reading of an original play, "A Leg Up", a two-act comedy by Cape playwrights Betsy Mangan and Karen McGarr, and directed by June Bowser-Barrett that follows the ups and downs of six women who bond in a Pilates class.
Mangan and McGarr juxtapose physical comedy and hilarious commentary with the serious efforts of these women to build their strength and confidence and achieve new insights into who it is they wish to become.
Representing a variety of callings, ages, and levels of fitness, the women struggle to master the challenging exercises and come to terms with not only their bodies but their over-scheduled lives as well. Mangan and McGarr juxtapose physical comedy and hilarious commentary with the serious efforts of these women to build their strength and confidence and achieve new insights into who it is they wish to become.
The "staged reading" is performed with scripts in hand but with some blocking and set props, as well as the reading of stage directions. The audience is encouraged to provide feedback either that evening or through an email exchange with the playwrights.
