The Mayflower, 1620: tough voyage. And probably worse if you were berthed next to the Billington family, whose mischief escalated until the patriarch became the first person executed in the colonies that became Massachusetts—for murder.
On the Mayflower were "Saints" and "Strangers." The "Saints" were the religious separatists who became known as the revered "Pilgrims." The "Strangers" were pretty much everybody else-- Church of England members coming to the New World more nakedly for economic purposes. Among the "Strangers" were the Billingtons. John Billington was probably one of the "mutinous" fellows who made the Mayflower Compact necessary. And he ended up as the first person executed in the Plymouth Colony, and so in the place now called Massachusetts. Join GREGORY WILLIAMS at this second talk in Barnstable Historical Society's series "Enjoy a Little Crime Before Dinner" in a look at this family and their times, close to a site prominent in an episode regarding John's wayward son. . . .
