Cotuit Library begins its new walking/reading challenge based on the Camino de Santiago.
Join the Cotuit Library’s first ever “Camino de Cotuit” this winter and let us challenge you to keep those New Year’s resolutions! You’ll be helping to support the Library while enjoying thematic programming based on the famous Camino de Santiago in Europe, a kick-off party and a Pilgrim’s Feast at journey’s end. Participants will register to walk or read a set number of miles or books from January 10th to March 9th: 91 miles (about 1/5th of our chosen Camino route) and/or 29 books for adults; 46 miles and/or 58 books for kids. The route we’ll be following runs from the French border all the way to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Registered participants earn a raffle ticket for each program they attend for a prize to be drawn at the Feast. The librarians will mark walkers’ and readers’ progress on our Camino de Cotuit route map with individual pins as participants update their status. You can even have friends and relatives participate remotely through the event website and Facebook Live posts.
We had such success with our Iditarod/Iditaread programs the last couple of years that we thought it was time to give another famous trek a chance. The goal is to raise funds for the Library while challenging patrons to accomplish physical fitness and literacy goals during the cold winter months. As incentive, the Library also provides many opportunities for patrons to learn more about the demanding Camino de Santiago, as well as Spanish culture and history.
The program schedule is as follows:
January 10 @4:00 p.m. – Camino Kick-off
January 20 @ 2:00 p.m. – Ginny Toukan shares her Camino Pilgrimage
January 24 @3:00 p.m. – Movie showing: The Way
February 7 @3:00 p.m. – Book Discussion: The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
February 17 @2:00 p.m. – Joyce & Tom Prince: The Knights Templar & Santiago de Compostela
February 23, time TBD: Scallop Shell Craft with Alice Cartier
February 24 @2:00 p.m. – Thomas Raftery: Trekking the Camino
March 2 @2:00 p.m. – TBD
March 9 @4:00 p.m. Pilgrims’ Feast!
Registration is $20 for adults (18+) and $10 for children (each additional child in a family is only $5). Registration packets with logs, maps, thematic reading suggestions and more are available at the Library. Patrons who do not wish to participate themselves are invited to donate funds to sponsor another walker/reader.
