The Cahoon Museum of American art presents a major summer exhibition, Master of the Maritime: James E. Buttersworth. This exhibition celebrates the talent and subject matter of marine painter, James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894), as well as his importance to American maritime history and art. One of the foremost American ship portraitists of the nineteenth century, Buttersworth’s paintings are known for their meticulous detail, dramatic settings, and grace in movement. Curated by Cahoon Museum director, Sarah Johnson, PhD, the exhibition is on view through Sunday, August 20, 2017.
