South Dennis Library Director Anne Speyer leads a discussion on Willa Cather’s book The Song of the Lark.
Cotuit Library continues its musical programming with a discussion of Willa Cather’s novel, The Song of the Lark, led by South Dennis Library Director, Anne Speyer. The book tells the story of Thea Kronborg, a young woman on a journey to become an opera singer at the end of the 19th century. Cather, one of the most important and influential writers of 20th century American literature, stated in the preface to her novel in 1932: “The story sets out to tell of an artist’s awakening and struggle; her floundering escape from a smug, domestic, self-satisfied provincial world of utter ignorance.”
Anne Speyer was an English teacher for 30 years in Williamstown, MA, before moving to the Cape. She has been Director at South Dennis for twelve years and has led numerous book discussions at local libraries. She also edits books, gives talks and teaches community education courses in literature.
This book discussion is part of our Royston Nash Music Appreciation Series, supported in part by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the Mid Cape Cultural Council.
Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk. This program is free, but please register at cotuitlibrary.org/events or contact the Library.
