A production of George Orwell’s “1984” opens on April 20th in the Tilden Arts Center Studio Theatre, as part of ArtSpring Cape Cod, a grass-roots collaboration between multiple arts and culture organizations across the region.
Published in 1949, Orwell's "1984" (and subsequent stage adaptations) is set in a world of constant war, ever present government surveillance, and, most notably, a political system dominated by a cult of personality and control of independent thinking by means of a constructed language called “newspeak” and a prohibition on “thoughtcrime.”
The production is directed by Tilden Arts Center Coordinator Vana Trudeau, and features Santino Torretti as Winston Smith, Patrick O’Rourke as Comrade O’Brien and Taryn VanEselstyn as Julia. “Audiences are welcomed into the world of Oceania from the moment they step up to the Box Office,” comments Trudeau. “We have created an immersive environment that blurs the line between the watchers and the watched.”
As a special feature of the project, the public is invited to a panel discussion on “fake news,” the phenomenon of “alternative facts” and how to be a perceptive consumer of media and information. The panel discussion will be held on Sunday April 23rd immediately following the Sunday matinee, at approximately 4:30 pm.
Reservations are highly recommended, as seating is limited. Tickets can be reserved and ordered online at www.capecod.edu/theatre or by calling the Box Office at 508.375.4044
