Woodcut Printmaking 101

Woodcut dates to 220 BC in China for textile printing and early 1300s in Europe for illustration. The process is easily to learn. You will start by carving a “plate” from wood with a relief design, then you’ll roll ink onto the remaining surface to print on fine art papers. We will explore ways to also print unique monoprints from the woodcut by using a different papers/color layers of ink and a variety of ways to position the plate. Some experience in any printmaking methods will be helpful but not required. Come discover the possibilities of a new method of printmaking!

Wood plates and carving tools provided.
Papers and inks are covered by the lab fee, payable to Alice at the first class.
Bring a work apron/work shirt and a snack.
