TROUBLESOME BILLINGTONS

On the Mayflower were “Saints” and “Strangers.” The “Saints” were the religious separatists who became known as the revered “Pilgrims.” The “Strangers” were pretty much everybody else– Church of England members coming to the New World more nakedly for economic purposes. Among the “Strangers” were the Billingtons. John Billington was probably one of the “mutinous” fellows who made the Mayflower Compact necessary. And he ended up as the first person executed in the Plymouth Colony, and so in the place now called Massachusetts.
