TROUBLESOME BILLINGTONS

The Mayflower, 1620: tough voyage. And probably worse if you were berthed next to the Billington family, whose mischief escalated until the patriarch became the first person executed in the colonies that became Massachusetts—for murder.

On the Mayflower were "Saints" and "Strangers." The "Saints" were the religious separatists who became known as the revered "Pilgrims." The "Strangers" were pretty much everybody else-- Church of England members coming to the New World more nakedly for economic purposes. Among the "Strangers" were the Billingtons. John Billington was probably one of the "mutinous" fellows who made the Mayflower Compact necessary.
